The heat is unbearable.

Our hostel, Dingo Moon, is on the unpopular end of the backpacker drag. Constant aircon leaves our 8 bed dorm room stale. Darwin was a great first stop to ease into backpacker life and remind us of the term “shared facilities”.

Without splurging on tours to Kakadu there isn’t much to do, we noticed most backpackers escape the heat with alcohol all day.

The days are long and the air is heavy. Sunsets are red and swollen. Without fully realising the intensity of the heat, on our second day we determinedly stepped out in the morning for a walk. After a torturous stroll to the botanic gardens and Mindil Beach we reached air conditioned relief at the museum. Upon return to the hostel we knew we would not be exploring too far again.

Over the next few days we managed to wander most of the CBD area, but were glad to be on our way to our next destination.

After years of talking about our trip, we were finally doing it! We’ve left our jobs, our apartment and our loved ones.

But why leave your whole life behind?

Despite our doubts, the enthusiasm for travel from everyone around us has been truly encouraging. Hopefully we’ll meet up with you all again along the way!
